Pinchflat Poster show 2014, Columbus Ohio

The opening of the 2014 Pinchflat Poster Show in Columbus, Ohio was a big hit!! 130 posters were sold during the opening day! Posters will be on sale at Paradise Garage for the rest of May, then they'll be at Roll: Bicycles in June, Baer Wheels in July, and Cafe Brioso in August, all in Columbus, Ohio.

Jason & I did the Q&A during the preview show and spoke about our poster "Desert Rose Dragon." We were nervous as expected. It's always interesting hearing stories from other artists. I told my semi-embarrasing childhood story of falling off my bike into a stinky ditch, which had nothing on another artists's story of wrecking his bike & having his front teeth knocked out (he had braces on his teeth, so the whole front row of teeth was suspended by his braces). And yet he continued to be a cyclist! WOW.

My photos didn't come out great, but Wild Goose has plenty of shots from the opening day. We're already looking forward to next year :)

Here's our print "Desert Rose Dragon"

Our Desert Rose Dragon print will be in the Pinchflat Bike Poster Show in Columbus!

Our second print, "Desert Rose Dragon" will be at the 2014 Columbus Pinchflat show in May. Pinchflat now spans four months and will have posters on display at Paradise Garage, Roll: Bicycles, Baer Wheels, and Cafe Brioso in Columbus, Ohio. The opening party is at Wild Goose Creative on May 3, 2014.  Pinchflat is an original bike poster show in Columbus that chooses 30 artists who create 30 prints each that sell for $30 a pop. We're excited that we made it into the show again this year.

There's also a preview party at Wild Goose Creative on May 2, 2014 from 5-7 so you can get an early look & purchase posters. There will be an artist Q&A around 5:30 which Jason & I were asked to speak at along with a few other artists. We're nervous because we stink in front of people. Hopefully we won't embarrass ourselves too much :)

"Desert Rose Dragon" is a 12" x 24", 3-color silkscreen print on French paper. This year we had Shout Out Loud Prints silkscreen them for us. We're really happy with how much of the detail was retained on the printed piece. Thanks for the awesome print job Pat!!

The bicycle in the print was my first bike as a kid, a Huffy Desert Rose with a super cool and comfy banana seat. My sister and I got the same bike that year for Christmas. My parents had this weird notion that if we got the same exact toys that we wouldn't fight over who got the coolest doll, game, or bike. That plan ultimately backfired on them when one of the identical items would break & we fought over which one of us it belonged to :D To this day I still put my name on everything I own :)

I had to wait until Spring to ride my pretty pink Desert Rose bike, which felt like an excruciatingly long time since I was a kid. I had never ridden a bike before, so I thought my parents would give me more of a lessen than they did. They pretty much said "Get on and peddle." That seemed simple enough. I managed to spin the wheels once before I fell off into the ditch in front of our house. That wouldn't have been so bad except for the fact that we lived in the country where everyone had septic tanks and smelly ditches that were quickly dug by backhoes. So I had to crawl out of a 3 foot deep ditch, covered in black gunk. My parents found this surprisingly hilarious, so I stormed off and said I was never getting on my bike again. After soaking in our retro pink bathtub with my clothes on, I put on a clean pair of pants and went back out to give it another go. So "never again" lasted about 10 minutes! I hopped on and rode all the way down the street without falling off (my parents skimped on training wheels). I think I was determined to not have my parents snicker at me again. 

I recently recounted that story to my dad who not surprisingly didn't remember it at all. Maybe he would've remembered it if he fell into a ditch and had someone laugh at him?

So why the dragon? We thought it would be neat to have a dragon doing a BMX style bike trick. I didn't think about how long it would take to draw the scales on the dragon. It was exhausting. And 42 hours later, our second print was completed :)

I create the art digitally in Illustrator using a 10-year old mouse instead of a tablet
('cause I'm old skool and stoopid).

2014 Zinggia Art Scholarship Winner

We're thrilled to announce the first ever Zinggia Arts Scholarship Winner...drum roll... Elizabeth Boch!

We had a lot of submissions from many qualified young artists, but we kept being drawn back to Elizabeth's work. When we first looked at her samples, we thought surely this can’t be the work of a high school student! Her art instructor noted that Elizabeth was her most outstanding student in 38 years of teaching which is a phenomenal testimonial and not hard to believe! Seriously, just take a look at the art samples that she sent us!!!

Elizabeth is from Rome, Ohio. She plans to major in Studio Art, and her dream career would be to work as a freelance fine artist. She's won a slew of art awards and has been in many art shows. We have no doubt that Elizabeth will be successful in her future art pursuits, because, ya know, she obviously ROCKS!

One of the questions we asked on the application was if the student was ever discouraged from pursuing a career in art, and if so, what were the reasons given, and why did they ultimately decide to ignore that advice. The majority of the applicants all said the same thing... they were told artists are poor or can't get work and that it's not a "real" job. Amazingly, all of the students declared that they couldn't foresee a future as anything but an artist and would rather be happy with their job than making loads of money (that's such a typical thing for an artist to say :)  Well, to set the record straight in case any guidance counselors or skeptical parents are reading this, you CAN be an artist and earn a decent living wage!

My own high school counselor told me I'd be wasting my brain by going to art school. Thankfully my parents were supportive, and I was highly motivated to succeed. Most scholarships available to me back then were for 4-year colleges where you had to major in something fancy (expensive) & super-brain powered (law, medicine). So even though I was a good student, I didn't qualify for a lot of scholarships because I wanted to go to a 2-year art school (The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where Jason & I first met). So that was the driving inspiration in starting the Zinggia Art Scholarship. We hope to continue the scholarship for many years to help young artists further their education in visual arts :)

Zinggia Art Scholarship Submissions

We're really thrilled with all of the submissions we've received for the inaugural Zinggia Art Scholarship. We had so many entries, it's going to be tough to choose a winner! And not only do we have many worthy candidates, we also had plenty of awesome envelope art! It was so exciting to come home to a mailbox stuffed with fantastically decorated packages :)

We'll be reviewing all submissions closely & and announcing the winner on the blog later this month.

Zinggia Art Scholarship

We're super excited that we started a scholarship for high school students who want to pursue a career in the visual arts field!! We're looking forward to all the amazing applicants who will apply!

We started the Zinggia Art Scholarship to help students further their education in visual arts (general art, painting, illustration, design, photography, printmaking, sculpture). The mission of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to students whose creativity, inventiveness, and desire for foil-wrapped burrito goodness knows no limits.


Eligibility Requirements
• High school senior
• Minimum 3.0 GPA
• Major career interest: Arts (general, painting, illustration, design, photography, printmaking, sculpture)
• United States citizen or a permanent resident of the United States of America
• Resident of the State of Ohio

Qualified Institutions & Level of Study
Award may be used for:
• Full-time study

Award may be used at:
• Art School
• Two-year college or technical school
• Four-year college

Location of school:
• United States
• School of choice does NOT need to be in Ohio

Application Requirements
• Current high school transcript with GPA
• Signed letter of recommendation from teacher or guidance counselor (preferably Art Teacher)

Other application requirements:
• Provide artwork samples: Submit images of five of your best pieces of artwork (no more or less) that have been created by you in the last four years. Samples can be provided on CD in JPEG format, or as photographs or printouts.
• Digital file names or printed samples must be labeled and named according to the list in Section D on page 2 of the application (Example: “Sample 1”, “Sample 2”, etc). A short description of each artwork is required.
• JPEGs should be high resolution (minimum 1200 pixels).
• Photographs or printouts should be no larger than 8.5” x 11”.
• All submissions are non-returnable, so do not send original pieces or anything that you don’t want returned.
• Artwork submitted must be original works produced by the applicant alone.

Additional information:
• Incomplete applications will not be considered. Check application for all requirements.
• Type or print legibly. Proofread and spell check because we take grammar super seriously!
• Scholarship winner must be accepted as a full time student at a college for the 2014-2015 academic year. Scholarship money is only awarded for an Arts-based program. Award will be paid to student once proof of acceptance at an academic school for post-secondary studies has been verified. Award can be used for tuition or supplies.

Winner selection process:
Applicants will be judged on their artistic abilities, financial need, grades, teacher recommendation, and overall creativity.  Scholarship winner will be notified by mail or email by April 1, 2014.
Zinggia reserves the right to not award scholarship if no qualified applicants apply.

Mail everything in an artsy-looking envelope to the address on the application. Emailed applications will not be accepted. If sending a CD, be sure that it is in a protective case.
